Summary: “Me and Damien were crazy children...”
Author’s Notes: This is just a short thing about Damien and Leiko as children.
The sun was bright overhead as Leiko sat in the backyard of Damien and Sirena’s house. They’d just bought it, after getting married a couple of months before. This was really the first Leiko had found the time to actually visit. She’d been busy with work and trying to keep everything up at her house.
“Me and Damien were crazy children,” she said, smiling. “We always had our parents worried about us when we’d run away for the day.”
“Run away for the day?” Sirena asked.
“Yeah, me and Leiko would run off. You know, just go down the street or something. We never went far, but our parents were positive that we’d been kidnapped or something,” Damien said, laughing.
Leiko nodded. “We had fun, even though we always got in so much trouble when we got home. Still, the next day we’d be off again.”
“That’s right. Then when we started school, we didn’t have the time to run like that,” Damien said.
“Well, we also got actual friends. We could say we were going to their houses and not get in trouble,” Leiko said.
Damien smiled. “Remember that weekend that our parents took us camping? I think what I remember the most is sitting around that campfire.”
“Yeah. We told so many stories. It was fun. I remember it was kind of cold but that fire kept us warm. I think there was something magical about that campfire, that no one else’s fire ever had,” Leiko said.
“It was probably because you were children. How old were you two?” Sirena asked.
“Five. It was the summer before we started school,” Damien said.
“You were both five? I thought you were older than her,” Sirena said.
Damien laughed. “No. We’re the same age. We’re twins, I thought you knew that.”
“You didn’t tell her? I thought that was something you’d have told her,” Leiko said.
“I might have forgotten. We know we’re twins, so I guess I assume everyone else can just tell,” Damien said.
“You look older than her, in my opinion,” Sirena said.
Leiko shrugged. “Maybe he does. But we’re both the same age. We’re fraternal twins, so it doesn’t appear that we look exactly alike. Like he said, we both know, so we just assume that everyone else does too.”
Leiko looked over at Sirena. Sirena was starting to show her own pregnancy. Leiko thought maybe she wanted to know about Damien’s childhood to get an idea of whether their child was going to be insane or not. Leiko smiled at that thought. She was sure their child would be okay. Especially since Damien had changed so much.
“So, being twins and identical in age, it probably made the two of you worse troublemakers than the other kids your age,” Sirena said.
Leiko and Damien thought for a moment. Leiko shrugged. “Maybe. Once we started school, we kind of separated a bit because we made our own friends. I think Damien got in trouble more than I did.”
”I did not!” Damien protested, then laughed. “Okay, maybe I did.”
“That’s what I thought,” Leiko replied.
“Anyway. Leiko was quiet but she knew how to get into trouble too. Believe me, I know a lot of things she did that she probably doesn’t even know I know,” he said.
“Oh yeah? What do you know that I don’t know you know?” she asked.
“Oh, it’s a secret,” Damien said casually.
“You two! I swear, you’re worse than children sometimes,” Sirena said, laughing. “I don’t know how your parents put up with you two. Did you two always argue?”
“Oh yeah, definitely. Part of the time it was just playful arguing, like now, and other times it got pretty loud and violent,” Leiko said.
Damien frowned slightly. “Yeah, they did get violent sometimes. Usually it wasn’t even your fault.”
“Oh, I wasn’t talking about that. I meant when we were little kids. We’d get mad at each other and tumble around on the floor until our parents broke us up,” Leiko said, knowing what Damien had been thinking.
“You kind of lost me there, but that’s okay. Children do argue a lot. It sounds like you two definitely had fun together as children,” Sirena said.
Leiko knew Damien had been thinking about the times after they grew up, when he’d take his anger out on her. She had forgiven him and forgot about it, unless someone brought it up. She was so glad he’d changed, she didn’t want to dwell on things of the past. She knew he still did, though, as it was obvious by what he said. She knew she’d have to talk to him privately sometime and let him know how she felt.
“We did have fun. And I know that the children we have will have fun together too,” Damien said, reaching over to take Sirena’s hand.
Leiko smiled, so glad that Damien had found someone he loved. Then she looked at her watch. “Well, sorry to cut this short, but I told Kalila I’d meet her for lunch.”
“It was fun talking to you, Leiko, and I hope you can come over again,” Sirena said, as she stood. Damien and Leiko stood as well.
“I’m sure I’ll get to. Hopefully things won’t be as busy over the next few months. Maybe we can get together for a meal again,” Leiko suggested.
“Sounds good. Next time it’ll be here, at our home,” Damien said.
Leiko nodded. “That sounds good to me. I’ll see you later,” she said, walking down the sidewalk to the gate. She went through the gate and toward her car. She looked back at the yard where Damien and Sirena still stood, and smiled. She was glad that they were such a happy family, and she knew that any children that were added to that family would only make it happier. She knew she didn’t want any children, but she knew that Damien would make a great father. She had known that since they were children themselves.
